Spring 2016

Welcome to the start of the 2016 tennis season. Here’s a quick summary of what’s happening at the Club and who you need to contact for information.

Big Changes at CHTC!

In the last few months, the club has bid a fond farewell to several members of coaching and committee staff.

Firstly, many of you know that our longstanding and popular coach, Marc Squire, moved on to a new challenge in Saffron Walden last year and from 1 January 2016 we welcomed our new coach, Sheetal Pendya, to CHTC. We wish Sheetal well in the coming year and look forward to hearing what he has planned for our members over the coming months.

More recently at the AGM, Peter Drury (Chairman), Rachel Drury (Secretary) and James Hatfield (Treasurer) all stepped down after decades of service to the club. The enormous time and effort they have all put in over the years have made the club what it is today and everyone at CHTC is indebted to them for their hard work and dedication.

We welcome our new committee members and wish our new Chairman, Vice-Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer every success in their new roles:

Andrew Temperton – Chair
Matthew Chater – Vice-Chair
Caroline Chater – Secretary
Sam Stent – Treasurer and Membership Secretary
Sheetal Pandya – Club Coach

Andy Westrop (Webmaster), William Parker (Social Secretary), Dids, Gransden, Peter Drury, James Hatfield, Adam Redgewell, Maria Selby, Mike Osborne, Wendy Taylor

Wimbledon Tickets
Thank you to everyone who signed up as a BTM member and opted into the Wimbledon Ballot. We will find out on 14th March how many pairs of tickets we have been allocated. As per last year, a ballot will be held for all eligible members and will be drawn at the first tournament of the season which will be held on Sunday 24th April at 2pm. Please note that only eligible members who have paid their subs by close of play on Saturday 23rd April will be entered into the ballot – so make sure you get your subs paid ASAP!

Pre-season work party
If you have a couple of hours to spare on Sunday 20th March 10-12am, come along and help us clean, fix, sweep, paint, trim, prune and generally tidy the club and courts ready for the forthcoming season. Everyone who comes to help will be rewarded with a drink in the pub afterwards!

Club tennis – Dates for your diary
We are kicking off the season with an open mixed doubles tournament at 2pm on Sunday 24th April 2016. All members are welcome to take part and there will be fun prizes for the winners on the day.

Further tournaments will be scheduled throughout the season so remember to check your emails and the club website regularly.

The 2016 annual club tournaments will be played on:

5th June – Ladies Doubles Day
26th June – Mixed Doubles Day
17th July – Mens Doubles Day

In 2015, the men’s doubles competition was run in the same way as the singles competitions. This seems to have been a success and we received lots of positive feedback from the players involved. We are Mixing up again this year. Men are asked to pair up and enter their names on the registration form outside the clubhouse. Then we will have the tournament all on one day.

This year’s Finals Day will be held on Sunday 11th September.

The ever popular club tennis sessions resume on Friday 1st April from 6pm. All welcome!

Shoe tags
In order to reduce costs and introduce efficiencies to the membership process, membership letters will be issued by email this year. Shoe tags will no longer be sent out.

Adult Tennis
Rusty Rackets will run on Thursday evenings this year starting on Thursday 14th April – further details will be circulated by Sheetal shortly. As always, the first 6 sessions are free to members.

Leaf Barclay-Smith has been organizing a regular social tennis gathering on Wednesday afternoons at 1:15 (thanks Leaf!). If you are interested in coming along ask her to add your name to the distribution list.

League Teams
If you would like to be considered for team selection, please register your interest with the appropriate team captain.

MEN’S A Andy Westrop
MEN’S B Dean King
MEN’S C Mark Lofting
MEN’S D Andrew Temperton
MIXED A Caroline Chater
MIXED B Dids Gransden
LADIES Maria Selby

As always junior members are offered 10 weeks free coaching. This year the junior coaching season starts on Saturday 16th April.

Junior Finals Day will be held on Saturday 3rd September.

Since 2013, our junior members have been given the opportunity to represent the club in a league devised by several of the local coaches. Do let Sheetal know if you would like to be considered.

Please note that for juniors participating in junior league matches, it is the parents’ responsibility to arrange transportation to and from the matches and to supervise their children for the duration of the match;
unfortunately club officials cannot always attend.

2016 coaching groups will once again be organised as follows:

Tots Tennis 9.00 to 10:00am:
An introduction to mini tennis for our youngest members aged 3-5 yrs.

Red Group 10:00 to 11:00am:
Mini ½ court tennis for children aged approximately 6-8 yrs. This group serves as a gentle introduction to the game for young children.

Orange Group 11:00 to 12:00pm:
3/4 court tennis for children aged approximately 8-10 years. This group is for children who have already attended the Red group and are ready to move on a stage. It equally serves 9-11 year old beginners.

Green Group / Intermediates
12:00 to 1:00pm:
Full court tennis – the next group up for juniors (aged 10-12 approximately) who are ready to enjoy a faster pace and further technical instruction.

Yellow Group / Advanced
1:00 to 2:00pm:
Challenging and competitive. A very significant step up from the intermediate group (for 12+ years).

Finally, a note to parents: In the event of bad weather it is the coach’s decision whether a junior coaching session should proceed. The safety of our juniors is paramount and it will be on this basis that Sheetal will make his decision.
