Finals Day Report

The Finals Day was held on September 7th despite the showers.

The Ladies Doubles Final

This was an enjoyable match between Sue Nunn and her partner Jill Toocaram with opponents Tina Hill and Rachel Drury. Tina and Rachel took an early lead in the first set and second sets leading 4-1 and then 5-2 in each set. Jill and Sue punished any weak shots, however, with Sue attacking with her forehand and Jill making very few errors. Tina played a very steady game and defended well with her backhand. The winners, Tina and Rachel, only clinched the match after a number of very nervy deuces on Rachel's serve in the penultimate game. The final score was 6-3, 6-4. Spectators thought the match was the best of recent years and kept them on the edge of their seats until the last point was played.

The Mixed Doubles Final

Jill was playing in her second final of the day with partner Sidney Pinches who had travelled from RAF Wittering to take part in the final against James Bushell and Sophy Atkin.

Jill and Sidney played a confident first set with Sophy and James making a slow and unsettled start. Towards the end of the first set they were beginning to get in the groove although Sidney and Jill won the first set 6-2. Sidney lost the first service game of the second set and this set the tone for the rest of those games. Jill continued to play a very steady game making very few errors throughout the match. Sidney was more erratic with some superb shots but also some very uncharacteristically weak shots. James and Sophy gained confidence despite the break in the match for a sharp shower mid way through. They took the second set 6-2 and continued to dominate the third set winning that 6-2. It was a very close fought match and an enjoyable tussle to watch.

The Ladies Singles

Unfortunately this match between Wendy Taylor and Sophy Aitkin, was curtailed before the end of the first set due to Wendy hurting her finger and unable to continue the match. She had made a confident start leading 5-0 before Sophy had adjusted from playing mixed to playing singles. Sophy won two games before the pair stopped playing. Wendy generously offered Sophy the match but Sophy graciously declined and both agreed to rearrange the match for another time when the men's singles match could also be played.

The Men's Doubles

This was an 'all Doe' final. Eldest and youngest brothers, Matthew and Bradley took on Dad, Tommy and middle son Joseph. This was played after a heavy down pour and the conditions were quite slippery. In a well fought competitive match Matthew and Bradley were the winners after losing the first set 2-6, but took the next two sets 6-0, 6-3.
